Facebook starts rolling out “Your time on Facebook”

About four months ago, social networking giant Facebook announced its own version of the time tracking functionality that many companies including Google and Apple have already implemented. Over the past few months, consumer technology companies have begun including some form of time tracking into their platforms and operating systems to help indicate to users their use patterns and how long they spend in apps and other usage patterns, to create healthy consumption of the technologies we have all come to love. Facebook’s version is no different from the implementations we have seen before: It tracks how much time you have spent on the Facebook app, allows you to block notifications after a set amount of allowed time has elapsed in order to promote good usage habits to prevent users from spending too much time on the platform as social media and electronic device addiction continues to grow rampant. “Your Time on Facebook” feature can be found in the overflow menu on the far-right of the bottom navigation bar, choose Settings & Privacy, then “Your Time on Facebook”.

Google Photos doubles limit for Live Albums

The number of photos and videos you can store in a private Google Photos Live Album has increased from 10,000 to 20,000. This is reported by Android Police. This brings the limit for private albums into line with the capacity for shared albums. The change was officially announced via an update made to a Google support page. 10,000 photos and video seems like a lot, but the functionality of Live Albums meant that you could reach that limit surprisingly quickly — especially since Google Photos gives users automatic uploads and unlimited storage. Live Albums use Google’s object recognition technology to automatically identify specific people or pets and group them together into an album. Since you’re not manually curating the media, albums can quickly fill up with every photo you’ve ever taken of your friends, kids, or pets no matter the quality, and for as long as you’ve been photographing them. Curation might still be warranted, but at least now you won’t be forced to do so quite as frequently before you get the dreaded “Live album paused” warning. If you’re still hitting the limit even with a capacity of 20,000 photos, you can always create a second live album with the same settings as an overflow.

Tumblr Removed From Apple App Store Over Images of Child Abuse

Tumblr has been removed from Apple’s app store because it let some users post images of child sexual abuse. The social network’s app was removed on 16 November but the reason for it being unavailable has only just come to light. In a statement it said the illegal images got through because its filters failed to spot them. It said getting the app re-listed was a “priority” but has given no date for when it might be available. Tumblr gave more details about why it was taken off Apple’s store after being approached by tech news site Cnet with a claim that indecent images of children were the cause. In its statement, it said that all images uploaded to Tumblr pass through a database of “known child sexual abuse material”. It added that any matches to the database are detected and deleted – and would never appear on its platform. In this case, it said, the images being uploaded were not in the industry database so its filters did not catch them. However, it said, the illegal content was discovered during a routine audit. “We immediately removed this content,” it said, and added: “Content safeguards are a challenging aspect of operating scaled platforms.” Tumblr has a reputation for allowing sexually-themed material to be shared on its service. This led to it being banned for a day in Indonesia over the mature content. South Korea has also asked it to do a better job of moderating adult content on the service.

Volkswagen now Lets Apple users Unlock their Car with Siri

Volkswagen is deepening its relationship with Apple on its VW Car-Net app. iOS users can now use Siri to lock and unlock their car, check estimate mileage with the fuel or charge left in their vehicle, and enable alarms. VW owners can use Siri to start and stop a charging session for their electric car or to turn on the defroster. They can also set a specific temperature and locate their car. Cart-Net isn’t free to all VW owners, though: the app costs a specific subscription fee per month. It allows vehicle owners to pinpoint their car’s location, set a geofence for it, and access diagnostics remotely. The Shortcuts feature is particularly nifty, especially if users can develop a morning routine around it. I’d imagine people in cold areas would want to remotely start their defroster and set the inside temperature. Doing it all in one step might not save that much time, but in the long run, it’s a nice feature. Apple debuted Siri Shortcuts with iOS 12, which is required for this new Volkswagen functionality. So far, we haven’t seen anything terribly impressive, but features like this make it clear that while it might not revolutionize our lives, it could make certain app actions more seamless. Meanwhile, Amazon has been continuously working to integrate its Alexa assistant into cars, including with the impending release of Echo Auto, which would bring the assistant into cars that weren’t initially built for it. The company’s also partnered with carmakers directly, like Ford, to install the assistant in cars. Apple has to play catch-up in the market, so Siri Shortcuts will be somewhat essential for that task. Source: The Verge
